A funeral could cost you up to $9,000 or more depending on the type of casket, vault, etc. you choose. Fortunately, there are many things you can do to save money so you will not have to worry about paying for the funeral. This way you can concentrate on grieving and taking care of family members during this difficult time.
Choose Cremation
If your loved one did not specify how they wanted to be buried, you may want to consider cremation. The average price for cremation is up to $3,000, which is much less than a funeral. When it comes to cremation you do have different options to choose from. There is direct cremation which is when your loved one's body will be cremated soon after their death before you have any type of funeral service. You do not have to worry about paying for embalming or purchasing a funeral casket. You can put the ashes in an urn that you can purchase on your own. The funeral home may also sell urns, but you would likely be able to find one that costs less.
You may want to scatter the ashes in a certain area so you would not have to purchase an urn. You could put some of the ashes in a necklace, plant a tree and put ashes in the hole, and much more. When the cremation is finished, the ashes are placed in a secure plastic bag and given to you.
If you want to bury the ashes in a plot at a cemetery you can choose to do so. You can also still have a memorial service so you and your loved ones can say goodbye. This memorial service may be at the funeral home, the cemetery, or you could choose to have it in your or someone else's home.
Buy Your Own Casket
One thing that can cost a lot of money is the casket for your loved one. If you are choosing a burial service, you will have casket options at the funeral home. If you choose one there make sure you ask them to show you the cheapest they have, as many funeral homes will start out with the higher-priced caskets. If you find a casket that you like take a picture of it or write down the name of it.
Look the casket up online and you will likely be able to find it at a much cheaper price. Most funeral homes will let you do this. In many cases, you can have the company you purchase the casket from ship it directly to the funeral home for you.
There are bronze and copper caskets which are the most durable and can be the most expensive. There are also stainless-steel caskets that are much less expensive, and they are also durable.
There are many more ways to save money on a funeral, such as shopping around for the right funeral home, not choosing to embalm, and much more.
