Has somebody very close to you pass away recently? Were they cremated? Perhaps the deceased person was very specific about not wanting a large and elaborate service at the time of their death. If that's the case, maybe you are honoring their wishes by having the cremation service right at your own home and inviting only those closest to them. Here are some tips to help you do this.
Set Up the Room
Think of the place in your house that would be best suited for the service to take place. For instance, you might choose the living room if you want a more formal feeling at the service. If you want a very casual setting, then your family room might be the best place for those who attend to gather.
No matter the room you select for the service, think of setting the deceased person's photographs in many different places. By doing that, they would definitely be the center of attention, even in absence. For example, place a large framed portrait of the deceased on an easel that everyone can see as they enter the room. Smaller framed photographs could be placed on the coffee table and end tables.
Place the deceased person's favorite belongings in the room, too. For instance, if they loved to paint, display their artwork. If they loved to cook, consider preparing some of the foods they loved to prepare and serve them to those who attend at the appropriate time.
Plan the Service
If your loved one who passed away truly did want things to be kept simple at the service following their death, that probably also means that the service will be a short one. You can make the best use of the time you have allotted for the service. For instance, maybe you will ask those in attendance to share memories of times spent with the deceased person, If you do that, consider asking those who speak to make their comments brief so that others will have the opportunity to speak, too. Keep the music simple as well. For example, sing a hymn together and then choose a soloist to sing the last song.
It's possible to host a cremation service in your home. However, it's ideal to have professional help as you take this on. Contact local cremation services to learn more about the process so you won't forget any important details.
